For Immediate Release :
With Freezing Temperatures in the forecast for this weekend Tensas Water is encouraging customers to take precautions and winterize.
Cold Weather Advisory: Protect Your Pipes This Winter
Freezing temperatures can cause water lines to freeze or burst. These simple steps help protect your home, reduce service disruptions, and prevent unexpectedly high-water bills.
Winterize Outdoor & Exposed Plumbing
• Insulate all exposed pipes (crawl spaces, attics, garages, exterior walls, piers, shops, sheds, etc).
• Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.
• Install insulated covers on outdoor faucets.
• Wrap irrigation components and backflow preventers with insulation.
Prepare Inside Your Home
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air reach plumbing.
• Keep your thermostat set to 55°F or higher, even when away.
• Know the location of your home’s main water shutoff valve in case of emergency.
Drip Faucets During a Freeze (32°F or below)
• Allow a slow, steady drip (one drop every 2-3 seconds) from faucets.
• Drip both hot and cold sides if your faucet has separate knobs.
• A small drip keeps water moving and helps prevent freezing and pressure buildup.
If Your Pipes Freeze
• Turn off your home’s main shutoff valve immediately. If you cannot locate your shutoff valve, please call (318) 766-3285 for assistance.
• Never attempt to thaw pipes with an open flame.
• Use warm air from a hair dryer or space heater—if safe to do so.
• Contact a licensed plumber if you cannot safely restore service.
Why This Matters
Taking these precautions helps prevent:
• Burst pipes and costly repairs
• Property damage
• High water bills from leaks after thawing
• Increased emergency responses for Tensas Water crews
These small steps go a long way in protecting our community during extreme cold.
